The military precision of a move

Posted by Christopher under: Family & Friends; House.

So The Girl has moved. In.

I’m not sure how this happened but she now has the keys to the house, my car and - most crucially - the bike shed. How do they do that? Anyway, suffice to say there’s a few boxes about the place. I’m writing this from the Peterborough services on the A1. I’m not going home until I can swing a cat again.

Tired of humanity…

Posted by Christopher under: Family & Friends; House; Linux & Open Source; Travel & Leisure; White Noise.

Sometimes people conspire to make you feel like you live in a nation of Very Bad People.

Incident One - A few days ago the house was broken into. I was away visiting older brother and so the house must have looked deserted. Said intruder got a surprise when younger brother greeted him when he walked into his room at around 11pm. He left taking with him one of my old mobile phones and leaving us with a hefty bill to replace the windows frame he had used as his entrance.

Incident Two - I was involved in a minor collision (my fault entirely) a week or so ago. I have received a letter claiming personal injury and GBP £1k plus in damages. Err, no.

Incident Three - Two snotty emails at work, one sent late Friday, just in time for the weekend. Thanks!

Not great. Still, here’s the bright side.

Wordpress 2.5 (on which this blog is written) is awesome. Upgrade was a cinch too.
Metal Michael continues his awesome adventures and I continue my persual of travel sites.
Tomorrow is another day.

I’ve got my mind set on you…

Posted by Christopher under: Family & Friends; House; Travel & Leisure.

Its Thanksgiving in the U.S.A. today so I guess I’ll join with the thousands of other bloggers in mentioning what I’m giving thanks for in 2007, in no particular order.

The New Passions - Sailing & Mountain Biking
Brothers who give me a lift at the end of a long trip/day
The ability to fly the world over
The house in which I live and the people I share it with
Log fires on dark winter nights
Things that give me hope because they don’t sell out.

I go far away, I know you’ll find another slave…

Foam polarises people. I only found this out when I finished making my own bed a few weeks back. Its big. Really big. In fact, beds don’t get any bigger than this. There is no standard size up from mine, a Super King. I’m not sure why I made it that big except to do star shapes in.

Anyway, the foam. I needed a mattress so to the internets and ebay. I put some cash down on a memory foam mattress which is when all the trouble started. People either swear by them or spend ten minutes explaining why theirs fell apart in two weeks flat. I just like it because it was invented by NASA, Q.E.D. very cool.

England is mine and it owes me a living…

The wisps of steam rise gently from my cup of Earl Grey whilst down the road by local curry shop is preparing my lamb balti just the way I like it. Hopefully.

A few months back I found a necklace from Tiffany & Co under the carpet. So spent a few minutes researching the origins. Turns out its an Elsa Peretti teardrop heart necklace and what those in the retail trade would call “A Regular Runner”. The Tiffany’s website quotes cost at USD $135. An ebay auction from google of an identical piece finished at 25 quid. Ah well.

Lastly, as there hasn’t been a picture up on my blog in a while, here is where I do my RHCE course at Leeds Met. The one disadvantage of the course is that you cant take it outside on the good days. Which this Bank Holiday has been.

In an interstellar burst I’m back to save the universe….again

Since my last post two weeks ago about a manic depressive poet I’ve been violently ill and have finally stopped blaming Subway or The Leeds Commercial’s beer lines and accepted a might have cooked a dodgy curry. Or left a good one to go bad. Either way I felt awful but will at some point experience The Joy Of Being Well Again. You know, its that feeling when you wake up and there is nothing wrong with you. So you rush downstairs and do lots of stuff and then feel ill again and have to sit down.

An old friend from Oz has been in touch so Vienna in April is looking like a distinct possibility. Wikitravel is about to get another hammering I feel…

Maybe if you say it you’ll mean it…

Huzzah! Ecotricity (my wonderful green energy suppliers) have put up a video showing the construction of one of their wind turbines. I’m not directly inling to youtube any longer as it messes up my HTML validation of which I am so proud however here it is:

If you would like to make a difference to the planet, feel better about yourself and brag to your friends, you can upgrade to wind-powered juice here. It doesn’t even cost any extra! I’m not even being paid to blog this! Huzzah!

Ugly ogres can be heroes too…

In trying to fix a shelf it managed to convince me it never should have been in the wall anyway and it now sits leaning against the wall with books stacked up around me. I did manage to get wall plugs to replace the run-of-the-mill ones that had come out however a combination of Serenity(7/10) and laziness got the better of me. Harumph!

I leave tomorrow for Cornwall as work takes me out of the office for a week for fresh air and excercise - its a good thing. On the way down I hope to be stopping at Clifton and Sara’s to catch up before the weekend when we celebrate their upcoming wedding. I’ll try and take some of the office with me but we shall see what comes of it.

The flames leapt higher and higher…

Posted by Christopher under: House.

So the firewood for the soon-to-be-installed wood burner has arrived. Arrived home from work to find the street blocked by a flatbed with a mechanical arm and an ex-Eton type called James scanning the house for signs of life. Thankfully brother and new temporary lodger were on hand to throw it temporarily into the front garden. I then head off to Halifax to pick up some monitors kindly donated by Martin, another Freecycler whilst I left said brother and lodger to move logs to newly constructed wood store in the cellar. On my return and descent into the cellar I was greeted with the site which I at first mistook to be a portal into a strange arboreal world, albeit a rather dead looking one. I gently remonstrated with the perpetrators and then proceeded to teach a masterclass in log-stacking, the results of which can be seen below. Huzzah!

Burn baby burn
